Buckle up – because we've got more than twenty years of biotech expertise in fragrance under our belts.
Biotechnology is all about harnessing cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet.
That might be using of a micro-organism such as baker's yeast to produce a useful chemical substance by fermentation. Or it might be using enzymes acting as industrial biocatalysts to either produce valuable chemicals or destroy hazardous substances.
No matter the application, our extensive expertise in biotechnology enables us to use sustainable sugar fermentation, bio-conversion techniques, and advanced distillation to create high-quality ingredients from renewable carbon – all of them affordable, readily available, and sustainable.
Biotechnology processes are some of the greenest out there today, often consuming fewer resources than traditional methods. And that’s exciting – because today’s conscious consumers are on the scent of planet-positive solutions. Not only does biotechnology address customers’ and consumers’ sustainability needs, but these greener processes also provide the high levels of quality and consistency the market demands.

Created in 2014 from Biotechnology, Clearwood® delivers all the rewards of modern ingredient design. Beaming with light, it offers the creamy warmth of amber and a dark woody character reminiscent of patchouli. Clearwood® is a truly inspiring ingredient made possible by the genius of science and rendered unforgettable by the perfumers’ intuition.
Clearwood® allows perfumers to better meet consumer demands as it fits long term sustainable development with a responsibly sourced sugarcane and an industrial biotech approach which tends to consume less resource than traditional processes and often uses renewable carbon sources.
“Clearwood® is a radiant versatile woody note. It delivers a clean patchouli like scent and provides lasting to the composition. Clearwood® has plenty of presence and elegance alike.”
Adlen Moumene, Principal Perfumer

Amber is an ingredient family with a long history. Nearly a century ago, in 1930, dsm-firmenich created Ambrox® from ambergris, aiming to uncover its natural essence. Fast-forward to 2016, when we used revolutionary biotechnology to invent Ambrox® Super: an extremely powerful yet elegant ambery odor with musky and woody tonalities. Compared to Cetalox®, this profile is more natural, more animalic, and closer to the original ambergris.
Combining the best of biotechnology and green chemistry, the Ambrox® Super process results in a renewable ingredient that delivers stable quality, reliable supply, and unlimited availability.

Dry, woody and ambery notes, with a strong trigeminal effect, this chemical structure is close to Ambrox®. Its dryness, tenacity and sleek elegance call to mind a precious wood rimmed in shining metal. Unforgiving strength, designed for pure performance.
Z11 emotionally empowers the signature of a perfume. The process combines biotechnology and green chemistry, resulting in a renewable ingredient that ensures stable quality, reliable supply and with unlimited availability.
