Nutrition Research Grant

An agile platform to advance nutrition research in the Asia-Pacific region

Purpose-led research grant program

dsm-firmenich is calling for applications for its Nutrition Research Grant Program.

The program aims to fund academics to progress nutrition research
relevant to diet and health for consumers in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the inaugural round, the topic of focus is “Health from the Gut across the Human Life Span”.

Anneleen Spooren, Vice President of Innovation, R&D and Regulatory, introduces the Nutrition Research Grant

This program's purpose seeks to keep the world's population healthy by developing science based solutions. In the last decades, the Asia-Pacific region represents the biggest percentage of this global growthment.

Researching the gut microbiome

We are announcing this request for applications to encourage research designed to elucidate health benefits stemming from human gut health, in the Asia-Pacific demographic.

Applicants would need to submit ideas that investigate the role of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) or postbiotics, singularly or in combination with probiotics, with the option of including that with other micronutrients, in modulating the gut microbiome and its subsequent impact on improving health status in a target population (i.e. age group, life stages, with existing health issues).

Eligibility

To be eligible for the nutrition grant we are looking for small, discrete, well-defined projects, preferably human clinical studies, that can be completed in 12-18 months.

  • Applications may include development of new research methodologies or technology, secondary analysis of existing data, analysis of biological samples from an initiated RCT, and pilot or feasibility studies.
  • Preliminary data are not required, particularly in applications proposing pilot or feasibility studies.
  • Project proposals must have significant scientific value, addressing existing nutrition and health issues of populations in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Please download and read the guidelines fully.

Grant recipients will receive up to €50,000 for up to 18 months of research work.
Application process

Applicants will be required to submit a letter of intent of their proposed project, and if short-listed, will be invited to submit a full application to the selection committee.

Grant recipients will be notified by August 2024. Up to 5 grants will be awarded in this grant round and the recipients will be invited to present their proposals at an award event, planned to be held at the end of November.

HMO Donation Program

The HMO donation program was established in 2010 to expand the knowledge and support research in HMOs. All healthcare professionals, researchers and academics interested in the field of human milk oligosaccharide research can apply for HMO donation.

To date, dsm-firmenich has supported over 100 research projects through the donation program. These projects span 55 different research centers all around the globe. The donation program accesses dsm-firmenich’s HMO library, which contains nearly 20 different HMO structures and mixtures.

Health from the gut starts here

A healthy human gut microbiome produces wide-ranging benefits beyond digestion. Promising clinical evidence and growing interest from the global scientific community have spotlighted benefits as diverse as supporting immune function, brain health, better mood and more.

Our Health from the Gut solutions are based on a deep understanding of the complex and interdependent interactions within gut ecosystems, and their links to holistic wellbeing. That’s why we’re taking a different approach to gut health innovation – one that supports and preserves the key pillars of a healthy gut ecosystem to maintain its natural balance.
