HMO Innovations for Early Life Nutrition Inspired by Nature, Supported by Science

Watch the video of the Q&A session that took place during ESPGHAN 2023, where Lars Bode, Director of the UC San Diego Larsson-Rosenquist Foundation Mother-Milk-Infant Center of Research Excellence (MOMI CORE) and Niels Banke, Chief Scientific Officer HMOs, DSM, discussed:

  • The importance of HMOs in early life nutrition, including the latest research on how HMOs support infant health
  • How HMOs are produced
  • Opportunities for innovation with HMOs
Human Milk Oligosaccharides

Naturally occurring in breast milk, Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) have evolved over thousands of years, with HMO research suggesting that specific HMOs can provide us with unique health benefits. In particular, HMOs may help support immunity and gut health, with a potential role in cognitive development, which may open future innovation opportunities.

HMO Donation Program

The HMO donation program was established in 2010 to expand the knowledge and support the research in HMOs. All healthcare professionals, researchers and academics interested in the field of Human Milk Oligosaccharide research can apply for HMO donation.

To date, DSM has supported over 100 research projects through the donation program. These projects span 55 different research centers all around the globe. The donation program accesses DSM’s HMO library, which contains nearly 20 different HMO structures and mixtures.

Maternal Nutrition

From pre-conception to post-natal, ensuring adequate nutrition for mothers and babies during the first 1,000 days of life is essential for supporting infant growth and development. But addressing the specific nutritional needs required during this critical period is not always possible through diet alone.

At ESPGHAN 2023, we’ll be showcasing our portfolio of science-backed nutritional solutions,  including omega-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA),  for which a growing body of evidence highlights a potential role in reducing the risk of preterm birth.

There are also greater opportunities to explore more sustainable sources of DHA with our algal-based omega-3 portfolio, designed to give moms peace of mind by supporting their nutritional needs through a natural alternative to fish oil.
