Reproductive challenges in dairy cows

Cow longevity is closely related to profitability but also sustainability; healthy cows reach their full milk production potential in the fifth year, whereas reproductive lifespan of dairy cows range between 3–4 years. With infertility being the first culling reason in dairy herds, it is well understood that reproductive disorders are multifactorial, and that nutrition plays an important role.

Reasons for culling in dairy cows

Why cows need more Beta-Carotene

  • Main sources of β-Carotene are forages. Except for grazing systems, β-Carotene levels are highly variable and often too low to meet modern dairy cows’ requirements.
  • Conservation processes such as silage or hay-making can lead to 80% decrease of β-Carotene in forages. Storage time also leads to a significant decrease of β-Carotene level over time (Nozière, 2006).
  • Majority of high-yielding dairy cows face a high deficiency in β-Carotene at the critical stage of follicle development.

Beta-Carotene benefits in dairy cows

  • Prepartum β-Carotene supplementation contributes to improved colostrum color and quality.
  • β-Carotene plasma levels before calving are key for subsequent reproductive performance.
  • β-Carotene consistently improves fertility through better follicle quality leading to better fertilization and less embryo loss.
