My grandfather was a farmer proud of his herd and respected by his neighbors. It looks like these times are gone but we can help today’s animal producers to be proud again of their efforts to feed the world.
When I started working in a French firm service selling premixes and feed solutions to feed millers some years ago, the first xylanases helped me to increase the wheat inclusion level instead of expensive imported corn in our poultry diets without creating sticky litters. The first phytase from DSM (Gist Brocades) had just been registered in EU, but phosphorus run-offs in manure, soil and rivers were ignored at that time, and customers were paying a lot more attention to Antibiotic Growth Promoters until their ban for anti-microbial resistance issues. The ban of the meat and bone meal in Europe resulting in the disappearance of a cheap source of organic phosphorus boosted the sales of phytase in broiler and swine diets from year 2000 onwards.
Our Alliance with Novozymes gave me the opportunity to bringing new innovative biological, valuable and safe solutions to the animal protein industry. Our HiPhos phytase is leading the still growing phytase market, and we are pioneering the new protease market with ProAct, reducing respectively the problematic emissions of Phosphorous and Nitrogen from manure into water systems and air in production areas. Our Carbohydrases toolbox makes possible the usage of feed ingredients and by-products locally produced into broiler and swine diets instead of imported corn and soybean meal. DSM makes me proud of bringing these innovations into the food chain: in front of our customers for making their business still possible; in front of their clients by making good quality animal protein more affordable for more people; in front of my three children and yours for whom we are working together to make a better world tomorrow than today.
