How we are reducing our carbon footprint at dsm-firmenich

With the global drive to decarbonization, dsm-firmenich has set ambitious goals on reducing its carbon emissions as expressed in our science-based targets:

We have a very challenging goal to reduce our scope 1 (company’s direct GHG emissions) and scope 2 (purchased energy) by 50% and using 75% of renewable electricity by 2030. In 2020, we have already achieved a 25% reduction in our GHG emissions and 60% of our electricity was purchased from renewable sources. We have also set a long-term target to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. To learn more, visit our Climate and Energy site.

In addition, we have set a carbon intensity reduction of 28% of its value chain emissions, the so-called scope 3 emissions. As the vast majority of scope 3 emissions are defined by the purchase of raw materials and services, reductions achieved by our supplier portfolio are of eminent importance to realize our scope 3 targets.

CO2REDUCE is our supplier engagement program, which was started in 2018 to work in close collaboration with our key suppliers on sharing ambitions, exchanging carbon footprint information and the creation of reduction roadmaps for achieving our emissions targets. As a consequence, the greenhouse gas performance of a supplier is a key criterion in supplier selection and volume contracting. In 2020 dsm-firmenich already achieved a 5% reduction on Scope 3 emissions through the CO2REDUCE program.

To support our customers on their journey of decarbonization and more sustainable business, we offer a series of services such as the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) of our main products, the carbon footprint of our premixes and  our Sustell™ service which combines full life cycle assessment (LCA) of animal protein production with practical, science-based, proven solutions to unlock the value of more sustainable business practices.

At dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, we are committed to making animal farming more sustainable and we know that we cannot do it alone. We need the support of our customers, our business partners, our suppliers and other value chain partners. Together, We Make it Possible.
