The History of Phytase: Why phytases are not all the same

Exogenous phytases have been used commercially since the early 1990s. It is one of the most widely used feed enzymes in poultry & swine nutrition due to its ability to liberate phosphorus from phytate. Phytase is a powerful tool for lowering feed costs and reducing the environmental impact of industrial livestock production, however not all phytases are the same.

Various formulation strategies and bio-engineering technologies have been used to enhance phytase production and performance. Phytases are evolving and studies have shown they have distinguishable differences in terms of optimal pH, temperature, and bio-efficacy on improving digestibility and reducing the anti-nutrient effects of phytate in poultry & swine diets. Here are a few product features and benefits to keep in mind when choosing a phytase for your feed to support greater performance and profitability:

  • High activity at low pH
  • Higher potency in vivo
  • High affinity for IP6, IP5, and IP4 phytate
  • Speed of release with more phytate degradation in the gastric phase
  • High thermostability, up to 95°C (203°F)
