dsm-firmenich Mycotoxin Survey 2021 – Focus Ruminants

The longest running and most comprehensive data set on mycotoxin occurrence.

The dsm-firmenich Mycotoxin Survey constitutes the longest running and most comprehensive data set on mycotoxin occurrence. The survey results provide insights on the incidence of the six major mycotoxins in the agricultural commodities used for livestock feed in order to identify the potential risk posed to livestock animal production.

A special report with Focus on most relevant commodities fed to ruminants

Ruminant diets tend to have a bigger diversity of ingredients, which increases the risk of contamination by mycotoxins. Understanding the risk of mycotoxin contamination and its potential consequences is essential for beef and dairy farming efficiency. This report provides an overview of the contamination by the most relevant mycotoxins to the most common ingredients used in ruminants all around the globe.

Key take away messages:

  1. Corn Silage as the main ingredient of TMRs, has a high risk of mycotoxin contamination in most regions of the world, with DON, ZEN and FUM as the most impactful ones. Mycotoxin risk management specific to those major mycotoxins is a must!
  2. In times of high grain prices, by-products like DDGS are used to reduce diet cost. DDGS, showed to be widely and heavily contaminated by multiple mycotoxins. Thus when fed to ruminants, adequate mycotoxin risk management is indispensable.
  3. DDGS, maize grain and wheat showed the highest levels of contamination. Barley and soy contain a more moderate risk of mycotoxin contamination - but be aware that already moderate mycotoxin levels can contribute to disease and performance losses.
  4. TMR, due to its diverse ingredients bears a high risk of co-contamination with multiple toxins. Multi-mycotoxin analyzing methods can reveal the full toxic load animals are exposed.
