Technical Marketing Analytical Services (TMAS) Team

dsm-firmenich’s Technical Marketing Analytical Services (TMAS) is located in Belvidere, New Jersey and provides dsm-firmenich with a wide range of analytical services. Just in 2021, TMAS ran 12,362 assays. Key areas of support include customer inquiries, customer studies, blend plant operations and innovation projects.

TMAS’ focus is on the analyses of vitamins, enzymes and carotenoids in various matrices including feed, premix and serum. It is currently staffed with four scientists with 72 years of experience combined.

Vuyani (Mike) Mekile

I graduated in 1988 B.S. (Math and chemistry) from University of Zululand, South Africa. In 1989 I was awarded Fullbright Scholarship (M.S. in math and statistics, Lehigh University, Bethlehem PA. Previous employment includes working as a material control and planning for South African Motor Corporation. As a process support chemist in Vitamin C operations, I was involved in a number of process improvement projects. With TMAS my key role is bringing new technologies to solve critical customer issues. I am currently serving as a committee member for  International Cooperation for Convergence of Technical Requirements for the Assessment of Feed Ingredients (ICCF).

Tara Ricker

I graduated from the University of New England in 1999 with a B.S. in Laboratory Science.  I began my career at Roche Vitamins in 2002 with the TMAS group as a scientist.  I perform the routine and problem-solving analysis of vitamins, carotenoids and enzymes for customers and the internal dsm-firmenich business.

Joseph O’Donnell

A 1998 graduate of Bloomsburg University with a B.S. in Biology. Hired by Roche Vitamins in 1999 as a Lab Technician. Joined TMAS in 2000 where I’ve worked for the last 20+ years as a Scientist. I currently perform vitamin and enzyme analytics on internal and customer submissions; troubleshoot problem samples; bring in new assays and equipment; and collaborate with local and global dsm-firmenich analytics and quality teams to support the growth of the Animal Nutrition and Health business.

Michele Hamilton

I graduated in 2013 with a B.S. in Animal Science from Delaware Valley University.  My prior work experience includes working as a chemist, leading agrochemical residue studies in a research laboratory. I also performed quality control analyses on raw materials in the pharmaceutical field. I joined dsm-firmenich in January 2022 as an Associate Scientist performing vitamin and enzyme analyses. 

With Blend plant operations, TMAS supports positive release programs, process monitoring, customer inquiries, homogeneity studies, mixer validations and verifying results from contract labs.

TMAS also supports numerous innovation projects and customer studies. Examples of 2021 projects include (but not limited to):

  1. Effect of formaldehyde on vitamin A potency
  2. Use of Balancius in turkeys
  3. Effect of varying biological measurements used to determine bone mineralization in nursery pigs
  4. Symphiome vs. other Eubiotic products
  5. Hy-D vs. competitor product
  6. Huge multi -year dsm-firmenich sponsored heifer/cow study with University of Florida
  7. Setting up methods to support new product launches
  8. Generation of stability profiles for our premixes
