Nutritional Services Frequently Asked Questions

All of your burning questions answered by the Nutritional Services team in the Nutritional Services FAQ article. Have you ever wondered what an NP code is? How can you find certain documentation? How do you get your premix analyzed? We are here to assist you every step of the way, we hope that this will provide clarity on a few common inquiries that we receive.

What does an NP code mean?

The NP stands for North American Premix and it is a sequential number that is generated at the time of formulation. It is also referred to as the product code. The last 3 digits of this code references the pack-size, most often you will see 025 for 25 KG bags and T01 for totes that range in sizes.

Definition of lot number and it’s location on the bag?

Lot numbers for premixes are located in the bottom right corner of the bag. The code begins with a site identifier that indicates where the premix was manufactured (90 – Pendergrass, 91 – Fort Worth, 92 – Ames, and 96 for Ayr). The rest of the number is sequential, and it is not related to the date of manufacture.

How long are retained samples kept?

Retained samples are kept for 1 year.

What is the process to follow for testing the potency of a premix lot?

First, it is very important to make the Account Manager aware that you would like to test for the potency of a premix. It is best for you to provide all the information that you possibly can on this lot and your reasoning for testing. You will need to provide premix product code and lot number. If you would like to submit your own retained sample, you will also need to provide the storage conditions and ensure proper sampling techniques

Once the relevant information is collected, your Account Manager will reach out to Nutritional Services or Local Quality to evaluate. We will coordinate the shipment of our retained sample or your provided sample for testing.

For Mineral Assays, we will send a sample to either ActLabs in Canada or Universal Testing (Phibro) in the US. For Vitamin Assays, we will send a sample to TMAS, Merieux (Canada) or Eurofins in the US. Most of our vitamins can be analyzed by our TMAS lab but there are a few (Folic Acid, B12, Biotin) that are outsourced to external labs. The sample along with the submission form will be sent to the lab. Results will be communicated back to the Account Manager with any relevant comments from Nutritional Services.

I'm having handling problems with my premix, what should I do?

In this scenario, you can either contact Nutritional Services directly or bring it up to your Account Manager. Nutritional Services can help evaluate your formulation as well as a sample. We can do a full premix quality characteristic evaluation in our premix quality lab in Ayr. Once we have reviewed and evaluated the premix, we can make recommendations to tackle the issue that you are experiencing whether it is flowability, segregation, dustiness, or any other concern.

What does a good premix specification look like?

A good premix specification will list the intended species and use rate, it will list the nutrients as well as the preferred sources. The units for the nutrients will be clearly defined. It is also very important to note any limits that you would like us to adhere to.

How do I request a free-goods sample?

You can discuss the need for a sample with your Account Manager. You will need to provide reasoning for the sample and if you will be wanting to test the sample in any way. The Account Manager and will enter a Free Goods Request Form.
